Māpunga

Māpunga, or black shags, are widespread across Aotearoa, inhabiting both freshwater and estuarine environments. They pursue their prey underwater, using their strong, paddle-like feet for propulsion and precision. Unlike many other waterbirds, their feathers are not fully waterproof. After diving, they must spread natural oils from a gland at the base of their tail and dry their wings like this individual, a behaviour often seen as they perch with wings outstretched to prevent becoming waterlogged.
