Pāteke have made a remarkable recovery thanks to years of dedicated conservation work, following severe declines caused by introduced mammalian predators. Their national population is now estimated at around 2,500 individuals. While this still makes the brown teal Aotearoa’s rarest mainland waterfowl, there is genuine hope that their numbers will continue to increase and that they will gradually re-establish across more of their former range.
