The Kaikōura coastline is home to thousands of kekeno, or New Zealand fur seals. After feeding in the nutrient-rich waters produced by the Hikurangi Trench, they haul out onto the rocky shore to rest, socialise, and play. At certain times of the year, the coastline comes alive with pups. They are incredibly curious, playful, and it’s always entertaining watching them learn how to use their flippers as they begin to navigate the complex world around them.
