The Kōkako or as they are sometimes known- the ghosts of the forest, were one of the main reasons I spent four days on Tiritiri Matangi Island. After only a fleeting glimpse on Kāpiti Island, and leaving Tiritiri empty-handed on my last visit, I knew I needed to give myself time.
After spending hours in what I thought was some suitable habitat, a pair appeared and treated me to an unforgettable encounter. I slowly backed up the track to sit eye-level with the canopy below, and this beautiful Kōkako was relaxed enough to feed on nīkau berries right in front of me. This individual is called Hemi. He and his partner live in the area this image was taken, and his partner was close by building a nest for the upcoming breeding season.
