Tūī are absent from Christchurch, so visiting places where they thrive in large numbers is always a delight. Highly territorial, they vigorously defend their space from other birds, all while filling the forest with a remarkable and complex song. Masters of mimicry, tūī can weave sounds from their environment into their calls. They even imitating the calls of gibbons after hearing them at Wellington Zoo, leaving international researchers in Zealandia momentarily convinced primates were in the forest and their mammal proof fence may have been intruded.
