The kārearea, New Zealand’s native falcon, stands as Aotearoa’s apex predator. Photographing one in the wild has been on my bucket list for many years. This encounter took place while monitoring tītī burrows, and it was as unexpected as it was unforgettable. Despite many dedicated trips in search of falcons, this individual appeared when I least anticipated it. For me, this image is a reminder to always be prepared, and the most meaningful opportunities often arrive when we expect them the least.
